NASA001 – Night Slugs Allstars Volume 1 http://nightslugs.net/releases/night-slugs-allstars-volume-1/ http://nightslugs.net/releases/night-slugs-allstars-volume-1/#comments Tue, 23 Nov 2010 04:06:53 +0000 Bok Bok http://nightslugs.net/?post_type=releases&p=131 The first in our new series of compilations, Allstars Volume 1 takes a look at where we’ve been this year, as well as where we’re headed.

Among the familiar material is some of our greatest moments of 2010: Lil Silva‘s own vocal hook drives the melodic “Golds 2 Get”, and his ever-potent “Seasons” makes an appearance as well. Kingdom‘s punishingly percussive “Bust Broke” takes militant syncopation to the next level. Velour contribute “Booty Slammer”, the porn-groove laden, synth-soaked stepper from their “The Velvet Collection” EP.  Girl Unit‘s reigning anthem “Wut” rounds off the album with a massive dose of crunk ecstasy.

But it wouldn’t be Night Slugs without the dubplate material and of that there is plenty: Mosca‘s “Square One VIP” is a new twist on the label’s first release, taking the track further in an upfront Club direction. L-Vis 1990 collaborates with Deep Teknologi’s T. Williams on their brutalist bassline-driven “Stand Up”. Egyptrixx gives a glimpse of things to come with the cosmic techno of “Liberation Front”, taken from his debut album. Bok Bok twists up Girl Unit’s futuristic club destroyer “IRL” into an acid grime ode to FWD>> circa ’04. The stripped-back dub of Bok Bok’s vinyl-only “Reclash” collaboration with Cubic Zirconia also has its debut.

Allstars Volume 1 introduces two new producers to the NS fold. The first is Montreal native Jacques Greene, whose debut on our friends the LuckyMe label is currently about to drop. Jacques gives us “(Baby I Don’t Know) What You Want”, a driving contemporary acid house piece, awash with hypercolour synths that place it right at home in the Night Slugs stable.
Second is London’s Optimum, a long-time collaborator of Ikonika, and Hum+Buzz label boss, whose “Broken Embrace” is an overt homage to the Detroit school of soulful, robotic techno, but pumped full of sub-bass.

NSWL005 – Cubic Zirconia / Bok Bok / Ikonika http://nightslugs.net/releases/nswl005-cubic-zirconia-bok-bok-ikonika/ http://nightslugs.net/releases/nswl005-cubic-zirconia-bok-bok-ikonika/#comments Tue, 23 Nov 2010 03:56:19 +0000 Bok Bok http://nightslugs.net/?post_type=releases&p=121 Number five in our White Label series is a trans-Atlantic soundclash centered around the New York group Cubic Zirconia.

On the A-side, elite Hyperdub producer Ikonika remixes Cubic Zirconia’s “Hoes Come Out At Night”, letting Tiombe Lockhart’s dirty rap vocals ride her charging 145bpm riddim. Infused with all of Ikonika’s signature cosmic synthwork, the ‘Hoes’ remix is ghettotech-flavoured and primed for peak-time dancefloors.

On the flip things get deeper as Bok Bok and Cubic Zirconia’s Nick Hook collaborate on an retrofuturistic acid-bassline monster by the name of “Reclash”. This time Tiombe is a ghostly presence, delivering disorientating incantations over Bok and Hook’s jacking 808 drums and soaring synth psychedelia.

Night Slugs Booty from outer space.

NS002 – Egyptrixx – The Only Way Up EP http://nightslugs.net/releases/egyptrixx-the-only-way-up-ep/ http://nightslugs.net/releases/egyptrixx-the-only-way-up-ep/#comments Tue, 23 Nov 2010 03:17:45 +0000 Bok Bok http://nightslugs.net/?post_type=releases&p=85 The label’s second release: “The Only Way Up” EP by Toronto-based producer Egyptrixx.

Egyptrixx makes celestial club music; jeep jams for a Saturn desert. Over the years his tracks have called on diverse styles from booty house to dubstep, but all of them share an exhilarating wrong-but-right tension – a shifting balance between melodic and dissonant, rapturous and antisocial.

At 122bpm, the EP’s lead track “The Only Way Up” is the ultimate subtle banger. A clattering rimshot beat plays host to immense swelling synths that build until breaking point, before a dangerously low sub drives the track to sheer soundsystem ecstasy. Hypnotic, mesmerising, punishing… nothing sounds quite like it.

The EP’s second original track takes a more direct approach. With its elastic bassline and warped synths “Everybody Bleeding” is like a futurist take on DJ Deeon’s “Rubberband Bass” -  definitely a riddim for the world’s tougher dancefloors.

The digital release includes three very special remixes:
Hyperdub’s first lady Ikonika reinterprets “The Only Way Up” as a soaring, blissed-out piece of synth’n'bass, permeated by choir pads and her signature emotive Moog.
Night Slugs’ NYC representative Kingdom goes in hard, borrowing the celestial synths of “Everybody Bleeding” to put together a MAW “Ha”-sampling ballroom club mix, featuring an incredibly ominous original vocal from his collaborator Shyvonne (we call this remix the “Space Ha”).
Finally Cubic Zirconia take “The Only Way Up” to dreamy new territory, entrapping Egyptrixx’s synths in classically jackin 808s while their singer Tiombe Lockhart provides the EP’s second original vocal.
