NASA001 – Night Slugs Allstars Volume 1

The first in our new series of compilations, Allstars Volume 1 takes a look at where we’ve been this year, as well as where we’re headed.

Among the familiar material is some of our greatest moments of 2010: Lil Silva‘s own vocal hook drives the melodic “Golds 2 Get”, and his ever-potent “Seasons” makes an appearance as well. Kingdom‘s punishingly percussive “Bust Broke” takes militant syncopation to the next level. Velour contribute “Booty Slammer”, the porn-groove laden, synth-soaked stepper from their “The Velvet Collection” EP. Girl Unit‘s reigning anthem “Wut” rounds off the album with a massive dose of crunk ecstasy.

But it wouldn’t be Night Slugs without the dubplate material and of that there is plenty: Mosca‘s “Square One VIP” is a new twist on the label’s first release, taking the track further in an upfront Club direction. L-Vis 1990 collaborates with Deep Teknologi’s T. Williams on their brutalist bassline-driven “Stand Up”. Egyptrixx gives a glimpse of things to come with the cosmic techno of “Liberation Front”, taken from his debut album. Bok Bok twists up Girl Unit’s futuristic club destroyer “IRL” into an acid grime ode to FWD>> circa ’04. The stripped-back dub of Bok Bok’s vinyl-only “Reclash” collaboration with Cubic Zirconia also has its debut.

Allstars Volume 1 introduces two new producers to the NS fold. The first is Montreal native Jacques Greene, whose debut on our friends the LuckyMe label is currently about to drop. Jacques gives us “(Baby I Don’t Know) What You Want”, a driving contemporary acid house piece, awash with hypercolour synths that place it right at home in the Night Slugs stable.
Second is London’s Optimum, a long-time collaborator of Ikonika, and Hum+Buzz label boss, whose “Broken Embrace” is an overt homage to the Detroit school of soulful, robotic techno, but pumped full of sub-bass.

The label’s first official release: the “Square One” EP from London producer Mosca. An iconic cross-section of genres that converge to pinpoint an entirely new one. With its crunk synth-line, broken drums and rolling bassline, “Square One” sums up a year of genre-obliterating experimentation in one fell swoop.

On the B-side, “Nike” is 10-minute long epic that sveltly builds, sneaking out of a rap-tempo intro to drop as a swung, 135 bpm autotuned techno banger

The digi EP also comes with a 7-minute Club Edit of “Nike” at a fixed tempo, for functional club situations.

The package is completed by five “Square One” remixes: UK house & funky hero Roska applies his gutter house technique; Bristol’s Julio Bashmore goes big-room with his “Longhorn” remix; Greena‘s high-pressure percussive mix sweats it out; Night Slugs label bosses Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 contribute a mix each, respectively crunked-up and jacking.

NS001, The Square One EP by London producer Mosca is out on the 25th of Jan 2010 at your usual mp3 stores with a limited 12″ doing the rounds around the same time. The 8-track-deep digi EP features the title track, already a dubplate anthem of 2009 and a bastion of genre-destroying UK Club. The B-side is Mosca’s “Nike”, a 10-minute masterpiece: “A sense of epic grandeur befitting global house, shuddering dub echoes, Latin percussion and still undeniably UK” writes Dan Hancox in the Guardian.

Completing the package are the “Square One” remixes from Greena, Roska, Julio Bashmore, myself Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990.
