Girl Unit‘s debut “IRL” was an instant underground anthem in London. The track’s syncopated 808/909 drumkit captures the manic energy of Chicago’s footwork movement at a UK-friendly 135bpm. While “IRL”‘s ominous monster island horns and sub-bass momentum references both Chicago and London in equal parts, the searing laser beam of a synth line that permeates the track launches it high into orbit.

“Shade On” picks up where “IRL” left off with another synthed-out, juked-out excursion further into space.

Completing the trio is the sublime “Temple Keys”, on which the dreamy piano keys that give the track its name recall Detroit pioneer Mr De, while a pulsating worm of a sawtooth provides sweet after-hours ecstasy.

The digital version of the EP is accompanied by two remixes. The first sees Scratcha DVA reinterpret “IRL” with his “Hi Emotions” remix. Piling on the pressure, DVA builds on the monstrous vibe of the original.
Meanwhile young Parisian French Fries‘ mix draws for tribal percussion and a massive jerking sub-bass, expanding “IRL” to its full bigroom potential.

This coming monday sees the release of Girl Unit’s incredible “IRL” EP featuring the title track that is driving London crazy. With heavy support form top-ranking DJs and intense anticipation from everyone else, it’s safe to say we’re excited about this record.

So much so that we’ve decided to give away the dubplate you can see being cut in the above video to one lucky Night Slugs/ Girl Unit fan. This is a one-off accetate dubplate of “IRL” with another track from the forthcoming EP called “Shade On” on the flip. It was lovingly cut at Music House in London a few days ago specially to give away to one of you. Two runners up will also get test presses of the IRL 12″ we’ll be putting out.
