NS010R – Bok Bok – Southside Remixes http://nightslugs.net/releases/ns010r-bok-bok-southside-remixes/ http://nightslugs.net/releases/ns010r-bok-bok-southside-remixes/#comments Tue, 10 Jul 2012 22:15:55 +0000 Bok Bok http://nightslugs.net/?post_type=releases&p=2094 In true organic style – just like when Vonstroke asked to remix “Wut” – rather than being commissioned by NS this release was kick-started by two of the remixers’ enthusiasm to work on BOK BOK’s 2011 grime hit “Silo Pass”.

First up is the much sought-after “Silo Pass” rework by one of the greatest ever Grime DJs and beat makers SIR SPYRO.

Spy gives “Silo” the VIP treatment, flipping that big square bass and amping up the drums for maximum disorientation at the drop. Stripping out the arps and breakdowns, this is “Silo Pass” newly streamlined by an intrinsic Grime logic.

An altogether different creation is the “Silo” remix by legendary ballroom house DJ VJUAN ALLURE. Vjuan delivered this mix to us without ever having access to stems of the original, so this is actually a bootleg and we love that. You won’t hear a Ha Crash anywhere in this super-raw, super-tracky piece of grimey House – instead Vjuan borrows Bok’s bass hits and big hollow snares, letting them ride out in a continuously jerking groove. This track has already been doing damage to runways and dancefloors on both sides of the Atlantic.

Following is Bok’s own remix of his track “Charisma Theme”. He borrows the twin bass arps and icy chimes of the original but eschews its jackin’ House format in favour of a regal 140-bpm half-time. Using a kit of frantic finger snaps, double/tripple-time hats, huge 808 booms and an ominously plasticcy cello line, the new “Charisma Theme” is an acid-Grime monster ready to turn raving crews into masses of paranoid energy.

Two further mixes are exclusive to the digital release, both heavily tape-saturated and representing another side of NS.
The first is NS co-founder L-VIS 1990′s mix for “Reminder”. The original was a simultaneous tribute to the Ghetto House of DJ Slugo and the pulse-saturated 8bar of Youngstar. L-Vis flips the basses and jacks up the drums in the super-raw style of his recent Club Constructions release creating a powerful analog of the OG.
Meanwhile, the NS roster’s youngest new member HELIX remixes “Look”, turning the lurching grimey original into a 9-minute slab of electrified, uncompromisingly propulsive techno.
